Code of ethics
Ethics Code
The journal Agricultura, Sociedad y Desarrollo is ruled by the ethics code of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), taking into account the guidelines from the Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors (http://publicationethics.org/files/u2/Best_Practice.pdf), for the intervention and performance of the stakeholders involved in the publication process of this journal (editors, editorial committee, authors and reviewers), which has the following guidelines:
Delivering studies or articles
The research manuscripts sent by authors to the journal must be original and present a pertinent balance of the work performed, as well as an objective discussion of their relevance. Their data must be presented unequivocally in the study developed. They must have enough details and references so as to allow others to replicate the study. Deceitful statements constitute a dishonest way of acting and will be inadmissible. Likewise, the articles may be withdrawn by their authors from the evaluation process or the editorial process, at such a time as when they request it in writing.
Access to data
To present results with honesty and without lies; falsification or manipulation of data is a dishonest practice. To corroborate, authors may be asked to provide original data from their study, in a timely manner, so they must be ready to offer access of these to the public. They must also be prepared to allow access to such data, even after the manuscript has been published.
Originality
- To comply with the publication requirements of the journal relative to originality: that the text is unpublished and pertinent to the themes published in the journal.
- To present their results with honesty and without lying, falsification or manipulation of data.
PROCEDURE FOR COMPLAINTS AND APPEALS
This procedure is applied to complaints and appeals about the procedures, policies and/or actions to the editorial staff of the journal, Agricultura, Sociedad y Desarrollo. Our staff will receive any complaint or appeal for the correction and better functioning of the journal, committing to analyze and adequately correct each case. The complaints and appeals must be sent to the email [email protected], and they will be reviewed by our staff; if there is anything that cannot be solved by them, as a last resort, the Editor in Chief of the journal will be involved. The complaints or appeals may be related to an error in the editorial procedure or to some error of judgement; they may also be due to delays or misconduct from our staff.
Conflicts of interest
These occur when the authors, reviewers or arbitrators, and editors have manifest interests that can influence their judgement about what is going to be published. They can be personal, academic, economic, political or religious. When the interests are relevant, they must inform the journal’s editors or director. In view of them, the journal has a format that makes reference to the absence of conflict of interests and which each of the authors must sign.
The Editorial Committee, Director and Editors of Revista Agricultura, Sociedad y Desarrollo are committed to not using in their research projects any partial or total contents from the articles sent for their possible publication, without the respective written consent by the authors. This means that unpublished studies that each of the articles sent to the journal contribute should not be used for the research conducted by its Director or Editors without the manifest and written consent by the author. It is considered that privileged information of the ideas obtained through peer review should be confidential and not exploited to attain personal primacy.
The director receives support from the members of the Editorial Committee to carry out the Pre-judgement of the manuscript, of the review/edit of the manuscripts where they have conflicts of interest, resulting from relationships or connections of collaboration or of any other type, with any of the authors or institutions related to the articles. The director demands from his collaborators to declare if there are opposing interests and to publish the corrections, if the opposing interests are discovered after the manuscript’s publication. If necessary, other appropriate measures should be taken, such as the publication of a retraction. There is assurance that when there are special numbers, the blind peer review process is the same as the one used in the main journal. There is assurance that the articles or manuscripts are accepted deliberately due to the academic merit and the interest of readers, and financial profit is not privileged.
Detection of plagiarism
Plagiarism is exteriorized in several ways, such as the use of articles or book chapters, books from another author and from own articles, intentional or not-intentional copy, paraphrasing parts of an article without citation or discussion of results from studies carried out by other authors.
In Agricultura, Sociedad y Desarrollo, plagiarism will not be allowed under any circumstance, since it is an unethical behavior and publication is unacceptable, whether as a redundant publication (that two or more documents, without complete crossed references, share the same data or results, hypotheses, discussion points or conclusions), or as direct plagiarism (absence of references, use of others’ ideas, published and unpublished).
When the manuscripts are received via the platform, to begin with, an exploration is conducted via internet to verify that that study has not been published; then, specialized software is used for its detection (Turnitin). The texts received will be subjected to review before sending them to editorial and academic judgement; they will be rejected if the percentage of similarity with another text published or available on internet is higher than 20%. In this case, the journal’s director will send a digital report to the author(s), who will have to communicate, through a message in the web platform, about the changes that should be made in the article or reject it immediately due to evident plagiarism.
If possible plagiarism is detected or reported in a text or article published, the procedure to follow and the consequences cover from a warning, if the case is an error or misunderstanding, it can lead to the rejection of the article and to the denunciation with institutions to which the author or authors belong.
When there is misconduct, the director and the editors must be guided by the COPE flow diagrams when required.
Multiple publications
In general, the author should not send an article that deals, essentially, with the same theme or the same approach, to more than one journal or similar publication. It is considered that sending the same manuscript to more than one journal is a dishonest practice, unethical, and will be unacceptable in the journal.
The authors must inform the editors if the results have been published before or if several reports or multiple analyses of the same data set are under consideration for their publication somewhere else.
The authors must provide copies of publications or similar studies presented to other journals, assuming the collective responsibility, if such is the case, for the study presented and published.
The journal, in case of detecting that the article is being subjected at the same time to another or other journals by the author(s), will inform the author(s) that their article will be dismissed from the platform and rejected for publication; in addition, the author(s) will be left without the possibility of being able to subject any article to the journal, due to misconduct.
When the article is published in the journal, Agricultura, Sociedad y Desarrollo, if the author(s) wish to publish their work as a book chapter or in a journal they must request the journal’s director for authorization.
Recognition of sources
In every case, the author(s) should recognize clearly the work from others and give credit, citing each of the publications that were used and influenced directly the study carried out.
This is why the studies or articles from others must be cited, with accuracy and only publications used in the text should be cited.
Authorship of the manuscript
Authorship is circumscribed to those who have contributed substantially in the idea, outline, execution or analysis of the information. Everyone who contributed must be listed as coauthors. The collaboration of other people, which have favored in some other way the study, should be recognized.
Once the article has been received, it will not be possible “for any reason” to add authors who have not been mentioned since the beginning of the nomination; and neither can the name of any author be omitted if the name was included since the beginning. In the case that the authors insist on it, the article will be relinquished, regardless of the phase of the editorial process it is in.
Correspondence author
This is where it is mentioned that one of the authors of the article should be responsible for communication with the journal. This author is responsible for ensuring that all the coauthors are included in the article. In addition, he/she must make sure that no unaffiliated person appears as a coauthor. It is also their responsibility to testify that all the coauthors are in agreement with the manuscript in their final version and with its publication.
Conflicts of interest
These occur when the authors, reviewers or arbitrators, and editors have manifest interests, which can influence their judgement about what is going to be published. These can be personal, academic, economic, political or religious. When the interests are relevant, they must inform the journal’s editors or director. In view of them, the journal has a format that makes reference to the absence of conflict of interests and which each of the authors must sign.

This means that unpublished studies that each of the articles sent to the journal contribute should not be used for the research conducted by its Director or Editors without the manifest and written consent by the author. It is considered that privileged information of the ideas obtained through peer review should be confidential and not taken advantage of to attain personal precedence.
The director receives support from the Editorial Committee to carry out the pre-judgement of the manuscript, of the review/edit of the manuscripts where they have conflicts of interest, resulting from the relationships or connections of collaboration or of any other type, with any of the authors or institutions related to the articles. There is assurance that when there are special numbers, the blind peer review process is the same as the one used in the main journal. There is assurance that the articles or manuscripts are accepted deliberately by the academic merit and the interest of readers and financial profit is not privileged.
JOURNAL POLICIES ON DATA EXCHANGE AND REPRODUCIBILITY
The journal Agricultura, Sociedad y Desarrollo promotes the Open Access to Data, recommending that authors share their research studies to allow the reproduction of their work.
The Data or articles can be deposited in public repositories, which will provide links to their work so they can be more easily cited.
The methodological details and procedures that the author(s) used should be enough to be used to replicate them in future studies.
In case they are used, all the specialized tools and software used in the study must be mentioned in detail, including the version or configuration.
For use of data, they must be regulated by the data protection laws and applicable ethical norms.
JOURNAL POLICY IN MATTERS OF ETHICAL SUPERVISION
Honesty
The evaluation procedure guarantees the transparency in the evaluation, edition and publication of each article, which appears in each number of the journal Agricultura, Sociedad y Desarrollo.
Confidentiality
The director and editorial team will monitor and care for the anonymity or confidentiality among reviewers and authors, during the entire process. It means that any member of the editorial team should not provide any person with information about an article sent in to the journal Agricultura, Sociedad y Desarrollo, other than the authors, editors of the area assigned by the director-editor, potential reviewers or other editorial advisers.
Addressing and responding concerns via email
The clarifications and consultations requested by authors, reviewers or any other person interested in the journal Agricultura, Sociedad y Desarrollo, will be answered promptly by the journal’s director. This will ensure that there will be a path for people to clarify their complaints and that this mechanism is clearly stated in the journal and information will be included; this is why the director should follow the procedure established in the COPE flow diagram about complaints.
Facilitate the article judgement
The judgement on the article will be made public when appropriate through the webpage of the journal Agricultura, Sociedad y Desarrollo and through its institutional email.
Dissemination
The numbers published of the journal are disseminated through repositories or platforms, databases and social networks.
Publication process
The director, with the support of the editors, will select objectively reviewers with experience and ability to judge the articles, which are in judgement process, to ensure that they will be judged by blind academic peers. The judgements are supervised by the director and editors, who define if the study is accepted, approved with changes, or rejected.
Respecting the times
The director and the editors will monitor the compliance of time to carry out judgements and publication of the articles that were accepted; this will contribute to guarantee a fast-paced dissemination of scientific findings. When a reviewer assigned for a revision does not feel qualified to carry out this work or knows that he/she will not be able to review it in an adequate period of time, they should notify the director and be excused from the review process, to proceed to seek another academic to perform this activity.
There is an irrefutable commitment of complying with the publication times, with an average of 6 months, in the double-blind peer review for its estimation or dismissal, which begins since its reception in the platform and with an average of 6 months for its publication since its partial acceptance. The journal is published every trimester, starting its publication at the beginning of January.
Confidentiality
The articles that are received in the journal should be treated as confidential documents. They should not be disseminated, shown or discussed with people foreign to the editorial process, and the only exception is the people who at the right time will carry out the article review and who were designated by the director in a timely manner.
The information and ideas obtained by the privilege of judging the article should be kept in confidentiality and not be used for personal advantage. Confidentiality will be respected during and after the evaluation process.
The reviewer will not involve other people in the review that was requested of him/her.
Conflict of interest
The reviewers must declare since the beginning of the process if there is a conflict of interest. If the identity of the author(s) is suspected, they must notify the journal director, if this knowledge presents any possible conflict of interests.
The reviewers must not judge articles where conflicts of interest interfere, which result from relationships of competition or co-authorship or by any other type of relationship with authors or institutions related to the manuscripts.
Standards of objectivity
The reviewer’s judgement will be based on the originality of the manuscript, its theoretical contribution to the theme, the methodology used, the way of presenting the results, the appropriateness and relevance of the bibliography cited, as well as the style, the coherence and the writing of the text.
The reviews should be carried out objectively and impartially and the recommendations or suggestions ought to be specific and constructive. They should not contain personal criticism to the authors.
The reviewers must express clearly their opinions, comments or observations that are pertinent to the manuscript, as well as explain their reasons.
They will issue their evaluation clearly and objectively, whether the approval, rejection or conditioning of the text in the period agreed.
Recognition of sources
The reviewers will be in charge of identifying relevant studies about the theme that were not cited by the manuscript authors. Any information validated in a publication, in a book, book chapter, article or previous study, should be accompanied by its corresponding citation.
The reviewers should communicate to the Director if a similarity is detected in the article or if any type of important plagiarism is identified with other studies about which there is knowledge and are published.
Text contents under review are not allowed to be used.
JOURNAL POLICY IN MATTERS OF INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
The authors who publish in this journal accept the following conditions:
- The authors conserve the author’s rights and transfer to the journal Agricultura, Sociedad y Desarrollo the right for the first publication, with the study registered with Creative Commons attribution license (CC Recognition-NonCommercial 4.0) that allows third parties to use what is published, as long as they mention the authorship of the study and the first publication in this journal.
- The authors can perform other contractual agreements independent and additional, for the non-exclusive distribution of the version of the article published in this journal (for example, to include them in an institutional repository or to publish them in a book), as long as they indicate clearly that the study was published for the first time in this journal.
- The authors assume the total responsibility for the opinions presented in the article and guarantee that they do not contain anything that infringes the author’s rights, literary or property of third parties.
- The authors confirm that they have read carefully the Editorial Norms or Guidelines for Authors and that they consent to them.
- The authors and coauthors agree in the order and the appearance and in the contribution that each had when writing the article.
- The authors are allowed and it is recommended that they publish their study online (for example, in institutional or personal webpages), after their article is published.
OPTIONS FROM THE JOURNAL FOR DISCUSSIONS AND CORRECTIONS AFTER PUBLICATION
Each of the articles, essays and other types of documents, which have been published in the journal Agricultura, Sociedad y Desarrollo, will be protected to remain intact and unchanged to the extent possible.
When it is necessary to modify, retract or even eliminate a published article, first there will be careful consideration by the director, together with the journal’s editors and if there is any question, the journal’s editorial committee will be involved. The decision made will always be based on the norms recommended by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
To address these cases, one of the procedures is the rectification, in function of the type, seriousness and ramifications of the mistake manifested. These can be dealt with through the elimination of the article, with an erratum, correction and retraction.
Elimination of articles
This action is executed in extraordinary or exceptional circumstances, where the setbacks or observations are extremely grave and cannot be solved through a statement that warns about the correction or retraction.
This will exclusively happen when the manuscript infringes other legally acquired rights or if they are defamatory; also, when an article is subjected to a judicial order.
In the journal, when an article is eliminated, its metadata will be conserved, such as the name of the authors and the title of the manuscript. Concerning its content, this will be replaced by a document which indicates that the article was eliminated due to legal matters.
Errata
This will be used when there is an involuntary error or omission in an article or essay, and which was made by the journal when the document has already been published and it is not possible to correct. Specifically, an erratum notice will be published after the publication, since not doing it could affect the registry of the publication and/or the prestige of authorship, and the journal, always making sure that the academic integrity of the article remains intact.
All the errors will be accompanied by a separate notice which should state clearly what was the omission and also explain in detail each of the changes that were made to the article.
This means that the article will be corrected and that an annotation will be added at the end referring to the erratum. The publication of the erratum will be separate, but associated to the corrected version and the article with the erratum or correction will be foliated and with DOI.
Corrections
In the cases when it is necessary to make changes to the study, a notice of correction will be elaborated, only when it is strictly necessary to correct the error or omission made by the authors, which could affect the registry of the publication or the reputation both of the authors and the journal, although the academic integrity of the author will remain unscathed.
Each or the errors will be accompanied by the notice separately which will provide the details of the error, in detail and clearly, as well as the changes that were made to the manuscript.
This implies that the article will be corrected and an annotation will be added at the end, which will signal the reference to the notice of correction.
A notice of erratum or correction will also be published separately, relating it with the corrected version. A watermark must be added that says “retracted article” to the version published in the article’s registry.
In front of the manuscript’s title, the following will be added: Retracted article [article title].
In addition, a declaration of retraction will be published separately, titled: “Retraction: [article title]”, which will be linked with the article retracted. The note must be signed by the journal’s editors.
The notice of declaration of retraction will be foliated and a DOI will be assigned.
Retractions
A note or notice of retraction will be published only when an error invalidates the conclusions of the article, and also when there has been misconduct in the research or misconduct in the publication. The authors can require a retraction of their article and it will only be granted if their motives satisfy the retraction criteria.
The elements that are considered for the retraction are:
- If there is obvious certainty that the research results are not reliable, due to various reasons.
- If they are the result of misconduct in the elaboration or management of data or images.
- If there are error(s) of calculation or error(s) in the experimental designs.
- If the results were published previously in another journal or in a book or book chapter, without the crossed references, the permission or the adequate justification.
The retractions are constituted by plagiarism, from evidence of fraudulent authorship, where there are compromised peer review proofs, where there are indications of unethical research or ethical misconduct and fraud, falsification or fabrication.
The time to carry out retractions should be as soon as possible.
