Abstract

Family farms play an important role in maintaining the agricultural economy in rural areas on the long-term, due to their knowledge in local production, their ability to adapt, and their transfer of knowledge from one generation to the next. These aspects implicate a close tie between capacities, potentialities and objectives related to development from a socioeconomic standpoint. This study analyzes these topics from that theoretical framework, using as a reference point the specific case of agricultural development in Nayarit. Factors that are considered include: age of the farmer, farm’s income, paid labor, employment rate, and multiculturalism as indicators of the achievement of socioeconomic objectives. The study was conducted from September 2015 to January 2016 through a questionnaire applied to 91 farmers. The data were analyzed using multiple linear regression models and Poisson regression. The results show that the age of farmers, income, jobs created, and multiculturalism that agricultural economic activities implicate, are influenced by: i) the scale of the farm and the existence of auxiliary industries; ii) the proactivity to innovate, the education level, and the matter of inheriting the farm; and iii) the participation of women in the farm’s decision-making.
