El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar el desarrollo de capacidades y de agencia en las mujeres a través del turismo rural, considerando como perspectiva teórica, el constructo del empoderamiento, a través de un enfoque cualitativo, con herramientas derivadas del método etnográfico. Este estudio, busca aportar conocimientos sobre las experiencias de las mujeres en el turismo rural y su contribución al desarrollo de sus comunidades. En los resultados, se exponen los procesos de transformación que han vivido las mujeres en cada una de las dimensiones del empoderamiento, a partir de su participación en proyectos de turismo rural, observándose que a pesar de que esos procesos son individuales, tienen importantes repercusiones a nivel colectivo.
