Abstract

The migratory currents of population from rural and indigenous communities in México towards the USA contribute among minors in the communities of origin, to consider the possibility of migrating as their life project. Through research with high school students in the Nahua community of San Mateo Ozolco, municipality of Calpan, Puebla, México, this study sought to identify the life project and goals of 39 students, as well as the obstacles and limitations that prevented their achievement. It was found that gender socialization processes from the family or domestic group, school, other social agents and the context in which they live influence their subjectivity and their vision of the future. Gender differences were found in the expectations of male and female students, associated to social constructions of gender; local contextual elements, such as national and international migration of adult generations, educational contents that praise the urban above the rural, and difficulties of economic, social and cultural nature that explain the tendency found in locating their life project outside their place of origin.
